And/ or, there’s yet another layer, which is exploring beer trends. Then there’s occasion-specific beer drinking: rare Belgian styles for celebrations, pastry stouts around the holidays, all things crisp and crushable for game days. We want fruity, funky sours in the summer and roasty, chocolatey stouts in the winter. We can choose to be generous, we can choose to care, we can choose to make a positive difference, Perhaps most powerfully of all - if we choose to pay attention - we have the power to choose what we believe.”ĭo you believe you can have the perfect day today? I do.You know the old saying, “Seasons change, trends come and go, but lager is forever.” Or, something like that, you get it. No one made us go to school, no one makes us go to work, or read a book or be kind. “The reality of the world is that - everything I do, everything you do, is a choice. If that doesn’t convince you, how about what Ari Weinzweig, Founder of Zingerman’s, said in his commencement address at U of M’s graduation: I say - actually Emma Goldman says - “when we can’t dream any longer we die.” It’s not realistic - certainly not everyday.” The non-believers say: “we can’t all have these perfect days, these ideal days. …by praying, walking, meditating, or exercising. …by listening to podcasts, reading books and articles, watching TED Talk videos, taking on and reflecting on life experiments such as those of the Awesome Initiative.įinally, in accordance with this month’s theme, I want to unleash positive energy or find rest. Now, some other components not mentioned in the video… …by writing on this blog, planning for Project Passion, thinking up and executing ideas for my summer job at Sweet Kreations, volunteering, and participating in the BC Vision meetings and action teams. …by spending quality time with friends and family, meeting other professionals, college kids, old people, and young people in my city, and making use of my online networks. My perfect day has some components in common with what Brendan (the guy in the video) says people typically describe. I know it’s ten minute video so probably only five of you will watch it, but it is spot on with what I want to say to you. More recently, another friend shared this video with me: Why 30 years old? Why not: what do I want my typical day to look like right now? There is nothing saying we can’t create our ideal day today, tomorrow, and the next day and turn it into our lifestyle. This question is what spurred me on to thinking about this perfect day idea. I loved hearing their answers because it tells you a lot about a person. I’ve answered the question and asked it to my friends as well. The question is this: from beginning to end, what do you want your typical day to look like when you are 30 years old?

Going back a few months to April, one of my friends (who is incredibly inspiring and amazing) was telling me about this one question he asks people, and this one question and how he uses it is what allowed him to teach a class at the University of Michigan and give his fellow students direction as they go through college. We need to think about it because, as author Annie Dillard points out, “the way we spend our days is the way we spend our lives.” These are the things we don’t think about but should.

How often do you have a day like that? Do you think you could have more days like that? What does your perfect day look like? What do you do? Who are you with? What does it feel like?
